Estate Planning

An Experienced Estate Planning Lawyer

It is never too early to start an estate plan. An estate plan is a way to outline your desires regarding the distribution of you assets after your death. "Estate Planning" is a generic term used to describe the several tools that are available to minimize death taxes and expenses, protect and direct the distribution of assets, and accommodate the particular needs of various potential legatees.

Before death, the goal of the person creating an estate plan is to get a reasonable level of comfort that he or she has set forth a plan that will best serve his or her wishes and will appropriately provide for the legatees in the best way possible.

After the death of an individual, the goal of the persons involved is to achieve the wishes of the deceased as quickly, conveniently, and efficiently as possible. A "Succession" is simply the legal proceeding that is almost always necessary in order to transfer the ownership of the deceased person's assets to the persons or entities in the way the deceased desired. With reasonable planning, it is usually a relatively simple and non-burdensome process.

Estate Planning usually includes preparation of Powers of Attorney and Advanced Medical Directives (sometimes referred to as "Living Wills"), depending upon the client's wishes.

I assist my clients with various aspects of estate planning and after-death procedures, including:

  • Creating or Modifying Estate Plans
  • Establishing or Amending Wills or Trusts
  • Powers of Attorney
  • Advanced Medical Directives ("Living Wills")
  • Successions and Probate

When I first meet with a new client I endeavor to understand the person's financial and family situation, as well as the needs and abilities of the persons (or charities) they wish to leave their assets to, and any specific desires or concerns they may have.

I provide my clients with various tools that can help them better understand their own situation, and that can help them collect the information that will be helpful to their legatees and heirs after they die.

My goal is to provide my clients with a good understanding of the options available to them and make them comfortable with the process. These are important decisions and I want my clients to feel at ease and make informed decisions.
